About Us
The Italian Historical Society of South Australia Inc. (IHSSA) is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the rich history of Italian immigration to South Australia. Founded in 2015, the society serves as a bridge between generations, connecting the descendants of Italian immigrants with their cultural heritage while contributing to the broader understanding of migration and multiculturalism in Australia.
Our mission revolves around three key pillars:
-
Collecting oral histories, documents, photographs, and other artifacts that capture the journey and contributions of Italian immigrants.
-
Preserving the stories and memories of individuals and families who have shaped South Australia’s cultural, economic, and social landscape.
-
Fostering an appreciation of Italian culture and its profound impact on the wider community.
Through initiatives like our flagship oral history project, “A Trunk Full of Dreams, A Suitcase Full of Memories,” we record first-hand accounts of Italian migrants, exploring their lives in Italy, their motivations for migrating, their experiences upon arrival, and the legacies they built.
The society is open to all who are interested in exploring the history of Italian immigration, including researchers, genealogists, students, and community members. Our work is guided by ethical standards and a commitment to accessibility, ensuring that the stories we collect are available for future generations to learn from and celebrate.
From preserving the memories of early settlers to exploring the influence of Italian cuisine, wine, and culture on South Australia, the IHSSA remains a vital repository of history and a hub for cultural enrichment.
Whether you are a descendant of Italian migrants, a researcher, or someone with a passion for history, we invite you to join us in honouring the vibrant legacy of South Australia’s Italian community.
Discover. Preserve. Celebrate.
